What criteria are used to block our emails? Is intelligence a requirement or common sense? I don't want to lose the things I purposefully subscribe to. If I am unable to unsubscribe to something I don't want, I report that as Spam and fully expect that to be blocked, otherwise--please don't concern yourself! And I agree with the man who made the statement about removing the porn sites. If they're so concerned, why don't they concentrate on removing things of that nature to make the internet a safer place! If you're not intelligent enough to know that pornography is perversion and is unhealthy by EVERY stretch of the imagination, then please don't presume to block anyone's mail or do anything else for that matter which requires thought because your judgement is seriously impaired and you shouldn't be making decisions for anyone--not even yourself!!! And let's not forget the thousands of sites that are only there to con us out of our hard-earned cash!!! You don't have to be Einstein or have a Ph.D. to know you're not going to make $10,000 in 1 month doing anything and if you do--it ain't legal and shouldn't be on the internet anyway!!! It seems to me that given the guidelines already in place, there certainly is a lot of latitude concerning what Spam is and isn't by the "powers that be". And just one more thing--my name is Lisa--what in the world do I need with a penile enlargement? I rest my case. I did this deliberately because I enjoy them!! What is the criteria for making the determination of what Spam is or isn't and who makes this determination? Does this require a modicum of intelligence or common sense? Apparently not. It's quite obvious that whatever guidelines are currently in place, they are allowed too much latitude. When I am unable to unsubscribe to a site I'm not interested in and report that as Spam, then I expect that site to be blocked from my address--otherwise, please don't presume to know what I want! Also, I agree with the man who suggests they do away with pornography on the internet. All of a sudden my ISP, attbi.com decided that shagmail was SPAM and started filtering it. It was not my filter, but theirs. Certainly an ISP has a right to try to eliminate SPAM, but Shagmail isn't SPAM. You have to subscribe to the newsletters to get them, verify by email that you want them, and you can unsubscribe at any time. This makes me wonder what else I'm not getting. They don't seem to mind that I get 5-10 porn messages a day, so why pick on Shagmail? Everything with ATT broadband has gone to s**t since the merger with comcast. I have been subscribed to three Shagmail publications for nearly two years. I subscribed to them myself after my wife found them for after searching the net for some stuff I might like. Everything was fine up until a little over two weeks ago. My regular Friday mailings never arrived on the 7th of February. At first, I didn't think much about it, putting it off to some sort of computer virus or network problem. But when mailings had not resumed within a week's time, I began to be curious. First, I went to Shagmail's web site. Everything seemed fine there. As a matter of fact, I visited one e-zine's archives and found that they had published throughout the week I was missing their mailings. Figuring I had been the victim of a list server problem, I tried to re- subscribe using my normal ISP (PeoplePC) e-mail address. Vainly I waited for the subscription verification e-mails to come. After about an hour, I gave up and tried a different tack. I subscribed to my Shagmail publications through my MSN Hotmail account. That worked- -briefly. I got the e-mail verifications, confirmed them, and got about a week's worth before MSN shut them down. And that really surprised me because if anyone's a SPAM sieve, it's MSN. Anyway, I did some research on the net about Shagmail and was surprised to learn that there are quite a number of people out there who believe that Shagmail and it's parent company or a company associated with them, PennMedia, are bigtime spammers. And from the sound of it, it looks like Shagmail may be on blocklists all over then Net. Oh, and BTW, in the opinion of some anti-spam vigilantes, if you post in this forum to complain about not receiving legitimate e-mails, then you are considered either a spammer yourself or a spam supporter. I can provide a link to support that. Just thought you all might like to know that. === http://groups.yahoo.com/group/i_did_not_get_my_email/message/27 === From: Date: Sat Mar 1, 2003 12:15 pm Subject: Update on Shagmail blocking On Friday, February 28, I, along with many other Shagmail subscribers received an e-mail from a Shagmail administrator concerning their subscribers' failure to receive their mailings. As a side note I find the inclusion of MSNHotmail to be something of a bitter irony as I have found MSN to be very lame at filtering out SPAM, especially of the pornographic type. Typically, anywhere from 1/2 to 2/3's of the SPAM that ends up in my "Junk Mail" folder advertises porn sites. And yet, MSN thinks they're doing their customers a favor when they block such publications as "Clean Laffs" (a clean humor letter), "Cat Nips" (an e-zine about cats and cat care), and "The Daily Tease" (a puzzle/trivia type letter). And these were publications I personally had subscribed to and flagged to go to my Inbox, not the Junk Mail folder. But when you do go to them with a legitimate complaint, say, about a mailbomb, they basically take a, "Sorry, there's nothing we can do about it" attitude approach to your problem. I'd say someone's got their head screwed on backwards, to put it nicely. === And how those flooders respond to private e-mails, trying to explain === === the situation with Shagmail === Path: uni-berlin.de!fu-berlin.de!news.maxwell.syr.edu!news.cis.ohio-state.edu !malgudi.oar.net!plonk.apk.net!news.apk.net!not-for-mail From: Jim Kennedy Newsgroups: news.admin.net-abuse.email Subject: Response via email from the Shagmail Sock Puppets Date: Fri, 07 Mar 2003 15:58:59 -0500 Organization: APK Net Lines: 48 Message-ID: <7r1i6vs28so6fqiq52qsd4dcr5kputksuk@4ax.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: gw.brokaw.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Trace: plonk.apk.net 1047070740 10574 206.183.7.50 (7 Mar 2003 20:59:00 GMT) X-Complaints-To: abuse@apk.net NNTP-Posting-Date: 7 Mar 2003 20:59:00 GMT X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 1.92/32.572 Xref: uni-berlin.de news.admin.net-abuse.email:1934947 I sent the following to three or four of the Shagmail Sock Puppets: Read your post. You are very mistaken about Shagmail. They are also known as Penn Media/Sendout Mail. I run an email server for a small company. They did this 24 hours a day for 3 and half days. I could send you pages and pages of the above if you want, from that 3.5 day period. The only way I could get them to stop was to contact their ISP by phone and have the ISP stop it. They brought our server to a near standstill, causing us loss of email and business. No ISP or network admin in their right mind would allow these criminals to connect to their network. You have to trust the technical people at your ISP at times to do what is needed to protect their system. If your ISP allows Shagmail to connect they could very well face the same problem I did, and then you wouldn't get any of your email. Also, it is your ISP's decision to block Shagmail, your post in the newsgroup is pointless, you need to discuss this with them. Also, dont use your email address in newsgroups, that is how you get spam :) So far, I got back one response: Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 12:17:37 -0800 (PST) From: Ron Cottrell (munged, though dunno why, he left it in the open) To: munged Subject: Re: DO THE INITIALS F.O. Your ISP owns your mailbox. You are only a renter, or in the case of freemail providers like Yahoo or Hotmail, you are not even a renter but a guest. A bit like a dependent child. When you own your own mailbox (anyone can who is willing to spend a little extra money and learn a little) you get to make all your own decisions about it. In between being a sqautter/guest/dependent and a freeholder there are a lot of gradations, and many of the better providers will let you tune your own individual mail filtering quite finely. > I've missed out on getting newsletters from Shagmail in my inbox! That's very strange, given that they 1. Subscribed me without my asking. 2. Ignored complaints passed to them by their provider, except to issue lies about my having subscribed 3. Kept trying to mail the same garbage to the same address that returned definitive 5xx errors for a month, at a rate of hundreds per day. 4. Kept trying to send mail to that same server for 4 additional muonths after their addresses were put into my border router's deny list, at a rate as high as 20 tries per minute and never less than 1 per minute until they stopped a couple weeks ago. >They have excellent and informative > newsletters & I sincerely hope that my Yahoo email will not be impeded > by ridiculous actions by uninformed ISP providers that can't > differentiate between a spam or a legit newsletters that suscribers > can actually enjoy in their spare time. Shagmail (aka sendoutmail.com, aka Penn Media, aka Wes Burnett) sends a whole lot of spam to a whole lot of people. That there are some people who have asked for his mail is not really relevant. > Let's get real people! Leave Shagmail alone and let US, the > suscribers decide whether or not we want Shagmail in our email > inboxes. The only people I've seen claiming to be actual subscribers are like yourself people using freemail addresses and Google to post remrkably similar messages here. You name wouldn't be Wes would it? Even if you are indeed not the same person as the author of <9df2a4e7.0303061718.2f6d6cfd@posting.google.com> or Wes Burnett, it is pretty clear to me that Penn Media is mailing a whole lot more people who ARE NOT subscribers than who are. The simple fact that they took about 6 months of having their servers shunned by my server before they stopped trying to mail me is a solid sign that they can't manage their lists competently and likely couldn't even tell you how many people are actually getting their mail. When an owner of a mail system sees a sender ignoring rejections and sending to mostly people who never subscribed, it is absolutely reasonable for them to block that sender. -- Now where did I hide that webwsite... === And here is the proof that Shagmail are coordinating the DDoS attack === Path: uni-berlin.de!cust-62-219-88-71.cust.bezeqint.NET!not-for-mail From: Dolphin Newsgroups: news.admin.net-abuse.email Subject: Shagmail did it: the proof Date: 9 Mar 2003 05:49:24 GMT Organization: Private person Lines: 104 Sender: Alexander Sheremet Message-ID: NNTP-Posting-Host: cust-62-219-88-71.cust.bezeqint.net (62.219.88.71) X-Trace: fu-berlin.de 1047188964 66300520 62.219.88.71 (16 [104765]) X-SPEWS: I am not X-PGP-key: 0xAAE2A579 X-PGP-key-fingerprint: 5B8E 3B28 7199 8CD3 4133 FA87 000B 0FB6 AAE2 A579 User-Agent: slrn/0.9.7.4 (Linux) Xref: uni-berlin.de news.admin.net-abuse.email:1935866 I've got a reply from one of those who was fooled by Shagmail to post about them in NANAE. He has been repeatedly told how to fix it by many ISPs and by every major anti-spam organization. And he has flat-out refused to comply. Since you are the one tasked with abuse issues, it's disingenious of you to pretend you haven't been told this a bazillion times. You're backpeddling now because you found out your cheap trick didn't play in Peoria. >Please be patient with us as we fix these problems. > >Again I do apologize and thank you for your time. Patient? Being blocklisted to heck and gone forever isn't being patient? Consider how entirely defensive blocklisting is. The blocking networks do send an absolutely minimal number of packets back to PennMedia (depending at what stage of SMTP the server rejects)...how passive can they be? PennMedia, in return, continues to hammer away for years, even where its addresses are *router-blocked* and do not even return a single ACK packet, ever! Blocklisting is an ultimate statement of patience. Here's what Shagmail needs to do, stated publicly just so Penn Media can't say they weren't told. You need to stop sending all bulk e-mail immediately. Then compose a one-last-bite "permission pass" e-mail. It shouldn't be a huge commercial blow-out, just a simple message explaining who you are, what you are doing, and what action the recipient needs to take in order to continue to receive your bulk e-mail. That action must be an affirmation (i.e., a positive, active response) that they wish to continue receiving your mail; it generally means returning a token unique to each address either by SMTP or by HTTP. Any address which does not return the specific token unique to that address is permanently removed from the list. After that, continue to confirm all new subscriptions and you will only be sending SOLICITED bulk e-mail. You will find that, over time, your mail will be welcome at an increasing number of servers. === Followup === Path: uni-berlin.de!64-121-56-80.c3-0.snmt-ubr2.sfrn-snmt.ca.cable.rcn.COM !not-for-mail From: Bob O`Bob Newsgroups: news.admin.net-abuse.email Subject: Re: Apology from PennMedia brown-nosing wench Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 16:12:38 -0800 Organization: Little piles of books, magazines, and papers, for the cat to knock over Lines: 23 Message-ID: <3E6D29F6.594E@cluestick.org> References: <64d7fe5b.0303101459.1b08e3b@posting.google.com> Reply-To: bob@cluestick.org NNTP-Posting-Host: 64-121-56-80.c3-0.snmt-ubr2.sfrn-snmt.ca.cable.rcn.com (64.121.56.80) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Trace: fu-berlin.de 1047341610 67410481 64.121.56.80 (16 [15412]) X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.04 (Win95; I) Xref: uni-berlin.de news.admin.net-abuse.email:1936979 invalid@example.com wrote: > That action must be > an affirmation (i.e., a positive, active response) that they wish to > continue receiving your mail; it generally means returning a token unique > to each address either by SMTP or by HTTP. There is no room for "removed" because that permits "not removed" The old lists need to be DESTROYED and only addresses which DO return their specific unique tokens can be added to the RE-INITIALIZED lists. If you don't make that perfectly clear, they WILL find some way to retain most of the crap addresses.
